Ramadan is an important time in my school community. Many students and their families celebrate Ramadan, and students in grade 5 and 6 will fast at this time of year. For some students, understanding how to participate in music classes during this time is a challenge. So, this year I decided to create an Orff Arrangement that would help my Muslim students feel seen and educate my Non-Muslim students around the practice of Ramadan. I found a poem written by Sawli Shaik and set it to a melody for voice, adding accompaniment options for barred instruments, drum, and body percussion. I paired the Orff Arrangement with the book Moon's Ramadan by Natasha Khan Kazi. What I love about this book is the way that it simultaneously teaches about the phases of the moon, the practice, meaning, and purpose of Ramadan, and the various traditions of Ramadan across the globe. This is especially meaningful at my school where students have diverse heritage. As I read the story, students would cheer when I came to their country's page, and assist me in pronouncing some of the vocabulary words in the story. After our time together creating music and learning more about the celebration of Ramadan, my Muslim students thanked me for this learning activity. Instead of feeling like they were at odds with music at this time of year, they were leaders in our lesson helping their classmates and their teacher understand them better.
