Elemental 'Ukulele: Pathways, Possibilities, and Context

Lorelei Batislaong

Picture
Join us as we examine an ʻukulele sequence that draws from principles of universal design, socio-constructivist philosophies, and recognizable elements of the Orff Approach. We will focus on teaching ʻukulele to elementary and middle school students. We will also consider perspectives and positionalities when approaching an instrument from different cultures and traditions.
Lorelei Batislaong is Associate Professor of General Music Education at Baldwin Wallace University outside Cleveland, Ohio. She taught elementary music in San Antonio and Austin, Texas for 14 years before teaching at The University of Texas at Austin and the University of the Incarnate Word. She received her BM in Music Education from Southwest Texas State University, an MM in Instrumental Conducting from Texas State University, and a PhD in Music and Human Learning from The University of Texas at Austin.

Lorelei has served on the AOSA Board of Trustees, chaired the AOSA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion subcommittee, and is the State Director of the Texas affiliate of the National Association for Music Education. Lorelei currently serves as the Content Coordinator and Lead Editor of Decolonizing the Music Room, a non-profit organization amplifying the presence of Black, Brown, Indigenous, and Asian music educators.

She presents clinics and workshops both nationally and internationally and is the co-author of Elemental ʻUkulele: Pathways and Possibilities. Her research interests include teacher noticing and cognition, teacher skill acquisition and development, equity in the classroom and teaching profession, and generally wondering why everything is the way it is and how it could be better.

Hoop dancing 101 for teachers and their students

dallas arcand jr.

Picture
During this Alberta Orff Chapter workshop, Dallas will share background teachings about hoop dancing and how and when to share this in a classroom setting. Teachers will build their practice hoops to take home and will be given directions to to build their own class set of hoops. Dallas will lead teachers through a series of traditional hoop dance steps building up to a show stopping routine. Teachers will practice the skills to share these steps and teachings with students. Dallas will end the workshop with some playful songs on his new children’s album to be used to teach both Cree culture and language.
Please note: This workshop will be professionally recorded. Alberta Orff Chapter will be producing an Indigenous Hoop Dance Resource in time for Indigenous People’s Month available for purchase in our online boutique. The Hoop Dance Resource will be available to workshop participants at a discounted rate when available.
Dallas Arcand Jr. is an accomplished second generation hoop dancer and aboriginal entertainer from Edmonton, Alberta,  Canada. Starting from an early age, he's been in front of crowds  of up to 40,000 people at the Calgary Stampede Rodeo half time show with his father, 3 time World Champion, Dallas Arcand Sr.
In 2010 he attended the Victoria School of the Performing Arts,  there he learned valuable insight into music and performing. In  2012 he and his father performed at the London Olympics  alongside the Canadian musician Corb Lund.
Dallas Arcand Jr. is a self-taught musician, playing flute, guitar,  piano and drums. He has translated those musical skills into  music production and is currently working on several hip hop  projects in Edmonton. He has 2 solo CDs available on iTunes. His  first traditional flute CD titled Moonshadows was released July  2018. His second contemporary flute CD, Coyote and Raven was  released in February 2019.
In 2016 Dallas competed in the World Champion Hoop Dance  Contest against his father in the adult category and placed 12th  in the world. As well in 2017, Dallas co-wrote a song that was  selected by Flo Rider’s production team for inclusion on Flo  Rider’s new album. Unfortunately, it was cut at the last minute  but it was very close.
His 45-50 minute show includes a cedar flute performance, A  World Championship Hoop Dance, as well as an informative  motivational speech to accompany the performance that depicts  the philosophies and concepts of Native culture. The show utilizes  a professionally mixed CD for Dallas to speak, play the flute, and  dance to a traditional drum group.
