You belong among the wildflowers...you belong somewhere you feel free
~ Tom Petty In this 1 hour Taste of Orff session, come prepared to sing, play, move, create, and improvise, drawing on Carl Orff's metaphor of the wild flower. This idea emerges from the unique seeds of inspiration in each of our classes and grows into something inspired and created by our students. Connecting Orff's idea with Tom Petty's Wildflowers, which centres grace and letting go of burdens, we hope that this session will encourage and uplift you to continue to sow the seeds of inspiration in each of your classes throughout the year. This FREE after school session is geared towards new music teachers, and teachers in the first few years of their career. Kim Friesen Wiens Kim Friesen has been teaching music with Edmonton Public Schools since 2000 and with the University of Alberta since 2014. Kim is the course director for the Orff Levels at the UofA and recently completed her Ph.D. in Elementary Music Education with a focus on critical music pedagogy and culturally sustaining music teaching. |

Maree Hennessy Maree Hennessy has worked across Early Childhood, Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, and community settings in music education and teacher training. She is recognised for her expertise in building teacher capacity and fostering excellence in teaching and learning. Maree lectures in Kodály Certificate Programs in Australia and abroad. She recently served as Director of the Kodály Center at Holy Names University, where she strengthened community partnerships, mentored emerging leaders, and oversaw the Master of Music and Graduate Summer Certificate programs grounded in the Kodály philosophy. Maree has contributed to curriculum development as Senior Project Writer for Education Queensland’s Curriculum to Classroom initiative, and as editor and key writer for Kodály Queensland’s Middle Years Music Education resource. In 2026, Maree is supporting the Music Every Day P-3 and Classroom Music programs at Brisbane Boys' College, and is serving on the Pedagogical Framework committee at BBC. She has contributed as consultant to the current South Australian Music Education Strategy, and is currently supporting teacher groups in Australia, Malaysia, South Africa and Canada, as lecturer and consultant. David Dockan
David Dockan is an Assistant Professor of Music Education at Louisiana State University (LSU), where he teaches elementary music methods, teaching music in diverse settings, and champions the integration of popular music in the curriculum. His research focuses on democratic music education, popular music pedagogies, music teacher professional agency and fostering inclusive music classrooms. Committed to empowering future music teachers, David envisions classrooms where students create music that reflects their diverse experiences and cultural backgrounds. |

Sue Harvie
As an elementary music specialist, Sue has defined her work with students and teachers as a combination of joyful music making and learning. She has her post levels training in Orff-Schulwerk and holds her Master of Education (Elementary Music) from the University of Alberta. Sue has presented workshops across Canada and the U.S and teaches Orff Level I at the U of A. Heather Nail Heather Nail has been an Orff Music Specialist for the Calgary Board of Education for 27 years. She holds Orff Level Three certification, and has a Master of Education degree from the University of Alberta, specializing in Elementary Music. Heather co-teaches the Introductory Orff level in Calgary, and in 2010 she was a semi-finalist in the Alberta Excellence in Teaching awards. She presents regularly at music conferences in western Canada and beyond, and in her spare time conducts the Westside Junior Concert Choir. Heather mentors emerging music teachers in Calgary, and is currently serving as the past-president of Carl Orff Canada. Follow her on Instagram @mrs_nail_music |
