Workshops: Coming Up in 2011/12

African Drumming in the Orff Classroom with Calla Isaak

Saturday, February 4, 2012 @ 9:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
(registration @ 8:30 a.m.)

Calla Isaak will lead everyone through beginning stages of developing drumming skills and ways to weave drumming into the Music classroom. She will share ways of incorporating musical literacy using the drums. Calla will work through a process of introducing the polymeric aspect of West African music, and teach a traditional African rhythm. Please bring a djembe or tubano, a shaker / maraca, and rhythm sticks if possible (be sure to label your instruments).

Teacher and clinician Calla Isaak currently teaches K-8 music in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Ms. Isaak received her Kodaly certification from Brandon University and her Orff teacher's certification from the University of Manitoba, where she has also been an instructor. Ms. Isaak has worked on the development of several music curricula, which are still in use in many Manitoba curricula. Recently, Ms. Isaak has studied African drumming in workshops with master drummers, including Mamady Keita, Nii Tettey Tetteh, Bruno Genero, Sowa Mensah, Allakomi, and local professional hand drummers Jordan Hanson and Jay Stoller.
